CREATIVE RESIDENCY AT CIMI (Centre International de Mathématiques et d'Informatique de Toulouse) on "UNCERTAINTY" theme
Apply for the 1+2 Factory Residency #14!
This creative residency on the theme of « UNCERTAINTY » will take place from February to early July 2024 at CIMI (Centre International de Mathématiques et Informatique de Toulouse) and is planned in three successive sequences lasting around two weeks: immersion in the laboratories, identification and meetings with CIMI researchers, creative time.
UNCERTAINTY
The characterization and control of uncertainty are fundamental issues in science, particularly in the fields of mathematics, computer science and engineering.
Any physical quantity measured carries with it an uncertainty inherent in the limited precision of the measuring instrument. Furthermore, the acquisition of physical data (such as medical or astronomical images, or sound recordings) is generally disturbed by noise sources, the effects of which need to be mitigated. Uncertainty also applies to the prediction of future events and the completion of missing data, for example in weather forecasting or recommendation systems, where the aim is to produce unknown information. Uncertainty has a random character, which explains why statistics and probability play a central role in the formulation and resolution of many problems. In addition, mathematics is littered with major principles of uncertainty, such as the inability to determine simultaneously and with arbitrary precision the speed and position of a moving particle, or the duration and frequency of a pure note. Finally, uncertainty is inherent to the scientific process and its quest for knowledge.
Place of residence: CIMI (Toulouse)
The winning artist is invited to develop a project around one or more of the above concepts, or others of his/her choice, relating to uncertainty, in close collaboration with researchers at the Centre International de Mathématiques et d’Informatique de Toulouse (CIMI).
CIMI is a structure dedicated to promoting and funding research in the fields of mathematics, computer science and their interactions. It is subsidized by the « Laboratoires d’Excellence » (LabEx) program of the French National Research Agency (ANR). It brings together members of the Institut de Mathématiques de Toulouse (IMT), the Institut de Recherche en Informatique de Toulouse (IRIT) and six teams from the Laboratoire d’Analyse et d’Architecture des Systèmes (LAAS). These three units are research laboratories under the supervision of the CNRS and components of the University of Toulouse.
The call for submissions, open from October 18 to December 28, 2023, aims to select a visual artist who proposes an authorial and contemporary take on the theme INCERTITUDE (all aesthetics combined). The future winner will be selected on the basis of the quality of his or her previous work, but above all on the relevance, originality and feasibility of his or her project on the proposed theme.
Applications must be sent by WeTransfer, in a single document, in PDF format, to the following address: philippeguionie@orange.fr until December 28, 2023 at 7 p.m. The winner will be selected by a jury of leading figures from the institutional, cultural and scientific worlds.
